Scheduling your classes can be extremely stressful, especially if you’ve never had to do so before. Here are student blogger Katie Overby’s schedules over the course of her three and a half years of college at Louisiana State University and what she learned to create the perfect class schedule!
Semester 1
ANTH 1003 10:30-11:30 MWF
MATH 1022 2:30-3:30 M W/ 3 HOURS OF LAB TIME
HSS 1000 8:30-9:30 W
GERM 1101 12:30-1:30 MTWTH
ENVS 1126 9:00-10:30 TTH
Here is my first-semester class schedule. At LSU, incoming freshmen have their schedule made for them, so I did not get much input as to which classes I would be taking at which time, however, I did learn a lot about what I like and do not like when it comes to class schedules. First, I did not like how there were breaks in between many of my classes. Living on campus I formed the bad habit of going back to my dorm room in between classes and not having the motivation to go to my next class. I would personally rather have my classes back to back so that I can get them done. It also created issues when I started my job, as the office hours were only 7-5 and on days such as Monday, where I had class until 3:30, it did not give me sufficient time to work for multiple hours.
Semester 2
GERM 1102 MTWTH 9:30-10:30
GEOG 2051 TTH 10:30-12:00
GEOG 1001 TTH 12:00-1:30
HIST 1007 MWF 10:30-11:30
INTL 2000 VIRTUAL
Learning from the mistakes of my first semester, my second semester I tried to put more classes back to back so I could get in more hours at work. This was a significant improvement and my only regret is starting so late in the day. On my Tuesday and Thursday days, where I had three classes back to back I was often hungry because of how late I had my lunch. This semester is also when I found out of the possibilities of online classes, where you find time on your own to complete the assignment modules. I really enjoyed this because it made things a lot more flexible, however, I do feel like I missed out on some of the benefits of an in-person class.
Semester 3
ART 2411 MWF 1:30-2:30
GEOG 2050 VIRTUAL
POLI 2057 TTH 9:00-10:30
HIST 2023 TTH 10:30-12:00
GERM 2101 MWF 12:30-1:30
My third semester I began alternating when I work and go to class. So Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I tried to do all afternoon classes and go to work in the morning and Tuesday and Thursday I had morning classes and worked in the afternoon. This worked well, but I would rather have my daily routine more uniform.
Semester 4
ENGL 2000 TTH 3:00-4:30
GERM 3060 TH 1:30-3:00
REL 2001 MWF 1:30-2:30
SOCL 2001 MWF 12:30-1:30
GERM 2102 MWF 11:30 -12:30
This semester’s schedule worked really well for me, as I was able to go to work in the
mornings and go to class in the afternoons., however, this semester occurred at the beginning of the pandemic, and all classes were then moved online via Zoom. This was definitely a learning curve for me, but all of my professors managed to make it work.
Semester 5 and 6
GERM 2075 MWF 4:30-5:30
HIST 2025 VIRTUAL
HIST 4026 MWF 1:30-2:30
INTL 3001 TTH 1:30-3:00
POLI 4040 MWF 2:30-3:30
ARTH 4422 VIRTUAL
GERM 3061 TTH 1:30-3:00
GERM 4043 MWF 2:30-3:30
HIST 4195 VIRTUAL
POLI 4043 VIRTUAL
Semesters 5 and 6 continued online, meaning all of my scheduled classes were taught via live Zoom meetings. I continued to work in the mornings and go to class in the afternoon, however, these online meetings were very convenient because I did not have to drive to campus and could learn from the comfort of my own home. This allowed me to visit my parents more as well.
Semester 7
GERM 2155 VIRTUAL
INTL 4003 TTH 3:00-4:30
POLI 2051 VIRTUAL
POLI 4000 VIRTUAL
POLI 4074 MWF 1:30-2:30
My final semester was my favorite. A majority of my classes were virtual, but I did get to go to campus for 2 of my classes. The only thing I would change about this schedule is that I wish my two classes were offered on the same days, so I wouldn’t have to go to campus for just 1 class every day of the week.
